If you sustain psychological trauma, treat yourself with care and deal with it as you would any other health issue- seek the help of competent healthcare professionals.

Trauma is a word which you all are probably familiar with. Essentially, trauma is the broader, secondary, or lingering damage that is caused by injury. For example, if someone breaks their nose in a car accident, they may also suffer from a black eye caused by the force that impacted them even though their eye was not struck. The bruising which marks their eye is a result of trauma. Physical injury is not the only source of trauma though. Psychological trauma can be caused by events which threaten the psyche.

There are countless ways that psychological trauma can be sustained: abuse, a tragic event, physical catastrophe, the loss of a loved one, etc. All of these things can cause trauma to our psyche, our "psychological body" so to speak. Sometimes trauma is so severe that it can manifest itself as more severe psychiatric disorders, such as Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) Like a physical injury, a psychological injury may heal improperly or scar if not treated with the appropriate care it deserves. When left untreated, trauma can fester and become more malignant. There is even new evidence which suggests that exposure to trauma sources over long periods of time can lead to psychiatric disorders as well, such as Complex PTSD (C-PTSD).

Imagine you fell and broke your arm. You would likely rush to the hospital in order to get the bone set properly and a cast molded around the injury. Otherwise your bone might heal improperly, causing further issues for you down the road. Unfortunately, we rarely treat our mental health as seriously as out physical health.
